Gazette Ceases Publication: Donates Archives to LHS

In 2010, the Larchmont Gazette ceased publication. In 2011 the publishers donated all contents to the Larchmont Historical Society, which will continue to make the Gazette archives available online.

Joseph “Joe” McOwen

Joseph “Joe” McOwen of Larchmont, NY and Palm Beach, FL passed away peacefully on February 10, 2011. Joe was a 1952 graduate of Iona Prep and a 1956 graduate of The College of Holy Cross. While at Iona Prep he excelled at tennis and basketball and at Holy Cross he was the captain of the tennis team. After graduation Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army where he represented the base as their #1 tennis player and was particularly proud of being the General’s personal tennis instructor.

During his business career Joe was a very successful advertising sales executive. While at Time magazine he was named “Drummer of the Year”. During his years with Newsweek, he enjoyed many unrivaled successes which included the start up of Inside Sports magazine. Through Joe’s love and dedication to tennis, he played an important role in establishing The Tennis International Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Joe became head coach for the Women’s Tennis Team of Fordham University where he led the team on to win the Patriot League Conference championship as well as honors in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Many who were part of his life were fortunate to share in his love for Notre Dame Football, the Larchmont Shore Club, the Town Tennis Club and The Beach Club in Palm Beach. Many also had a true appreciation of his quick wit, charm, sense of humor, competitive nature and never taking “no” for an answer. Joe’s last 31 years were filled with love, joy, peace and gratitude because of the fellowship of the Larchmont Group’s 12 Step Program. Joe served on the Board of Directors of the Halfway Houses of Westchester, Inc.

Joe was most proud of his six children and nine grandchildren. They brought joy and love to his heart every day. Joe is survived by his wife Jeannie Secoli McOwen and six children: Joe (Sugar), Catherine Hanson, Maureen Symington, Diane, Carol Ann, Brian (Jenny) and stepson Bill Gibson (Sheri). He is also survived by his former wife, Dorothy Flynn McOwen and grandchildren: Joe McOwen; Trish, Moe and Kevin Hanson; Jimmy, Claire and LizAnne Symington; Max and Ridley Gibson and by his sister Mary Elaine Sweeney, sister in law Lisa McOwen and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother George McOwen and sister Pat Heine.

Visitation will be at Fox’s Funeral Home in Larchmont, NY on Friday, February 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The mass in celebration of his life will be at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Larchmont, NY on Saturday, February 26 at 10AM. Joe will then be reunited with his parents at The Cemetery of the Gate of Heaven to rest in eternal peace. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Joe’s name to Halfway Houses of Westchester, Inc., 14 Longview Avenue, White Plains, NY, 10605.
